Senator Patty Murray discusses Title X funding for Washington State at Planned Parenthood in Seattle

Senator Patty Murray holds an in-person press conference at a Planned Parenthood health center in Seattle to discuss Title X funding for Washington State. The funding will ensure patients have access to cancer screenings, STI testing and treatment, birth control, and more.

SEATTLE, Washington. – Senator Patty Murray discussed Title X funding for Washington at Planned Parenthood on Friday morning.

Title X is the only federal grant program dedicated solely to providing individuals with comprehensive family planning and related preventive health services.

Murray stood with leaders from Planned Parenthood Great Northwest, Hawaii, Alaska, Indiana, Kentucky to highlight the importance of the Title X program in Washington State.

“We are here today because we need to sound the alarm,” said Jennifer Allen, CEO of Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates. “Access to abortion is disappearing. Some people are aware of this, but more than that, access to contraceptives is also under attack.”

“The same people attacking access to abortion are also trying to suppress preventive care through Title X, and we’ve seen that before. When the Trump-Pence administration attacked Title X and instituted a rule of gag in 2019, it was disastrous for It reduced the number of patients who could access care, 1.5 million people lost access to Title X-funded care – including everyone in Washington,” a Allen said.

“Across Washington State, the Title X program provides the essential reproductive health care patients need to stay healthy,” Sen. Patty Murray said at Friday’s press conference. “The resources I fought for in the other Washington mean that patients here in this Washington can get the birth control they need to plan a family on their own terms, life-saving breast and pelvic exams to detect the early-stage cancer, STI testing and treatment, and more.”

Senator Murray then posted on Twitter, sharing his thoughts on the importance of Title X and how Republicans are aiming to scrap it.
